What Is Metal Slitting?

Metal slitting is the process of cutting a wide master coil or sheet into narrower strips of a required width. The coil is unwound, passed through a set of circular knives mounted on arbors, and rewound into smaller coils, often called mults or strips.

It looks simple, but the quality of the cut decides how well those strips behave in the next step of production, whether that is stamping, forming, winding, or drawing. A strip that is slightly off in width, or that carries a heavy burr, can stop a high-speed line.

How the Slitting Process Works

  1. Uncoiling: The master coil is mounted on an uncoiler and fed into the line.
  2. Slitting: Rotary knives, spaced with precision spacers to the required widths, cut the material into multiple strips at once.
  3. Recoiling: The strips are wound onto a recoiler under controlled tension, with separators to keep the edges from damaging each other.
  4. Inspection and packing: Each coil is checked for dimensions and surface condition, then packed for dispatch.

The knife setup, clearance between knives, and tension control all depend on the material, its thickness, and its temper. Copper and copper alloys, for example, behave very differently from steel, so setup cannot be one-size-fits-all.

The Tolerances That Matter

When you buy slit strips, these are the specifications worth checking:

  • Width tolerance: Consistent width keeps progressive dies and feeding systems running without adjustment.
  • Burr height: Excess burr damages tooling, causes assembly problems, and can be a safety risk during handling.
  • Edge quality: Clean, smooth edges reduce cracking during forming and bending.
  • Coil set and camber: Strips that bow or curve sideways cause feeding errors and uneven results.
  • Surface condition: Scratches, marks, or contamination picked up during processing can lead to rejections downstream.
  • Coil build: Neat winding with no telescoping makes uncoiling smooth and prevents line stoppages.

Why Precision-Slit Strips Reduce Waste

Less scrap. When strips are cut to the exact width your part needs, there is no trimming, and edge waste is kept to a minimum.

Fewer line stoppages. Uniform width and clean edges mean fewer die adjustments, fewer jams, and less unplanned downtime.

Longer tool life. Low burr and consistent edges are gentler on dies and tooling.

Better inventory use. Buying one master coil and slitting it to several widths lets you serve different parts from the same stock.

Slitting In-House vs. Buying From a Service Center

Setting up your own slitting line requires heavy capital, floor space, skilled operators, and ongoing knife maintenance. For many manufacturers, a service center is the more practical route.

A service center makes sense when:

  • Your width requirements change often or vary by order
  • You need small to medium quantities rather than full master coils
  • You work with multiple materials or alloys
  • You want consistent quality without managing slitting equipment and tooling
  • You need dependable supply and faster turnaround on custom sizes

In-house slitting can work for very high, steady volumes of a single specification, but even then many plants outsource the overflow.

Industries That Rely on Slit Strips and Coils

Precision-slit metal goes into a wide range of products, including:

  • Automotive: connectors, terminals, and stamped components
  • Electrical: switchgear parts, contacts, busbars, and wiring components
  • Electronics: shields, lead frames, and small precision parts
  • Engineering and industrial manufacturing: fabricated and formed components

Quality Checks to Ask Your Supplier About

Before you place an order, ask your supplier:

  • Do you inspect dimensions, thickness, and surface quality on every lot?
  • Is there an in-house quality lab?
  • How do you control burr and edge condition?
  • What is your process for packing coils to prevent damage in transit?
  • Can you provide test certificates when required?

A supplier who answers these clearly is usually one who controls the process well.

Choosing the Right Slitting Partner in Mumbai

Look for a partner with experience across both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, a documented quality process, and the ability to handle custom widths and quantities. Proximity matters too: a Mumbai-based service center shortens lead times and makes it easier to resolve specifications quickly.

Bafna Mettek brings more than 75 years of experience in the metal industry, formerly as B. Rameshkumar Metals, together with precision slitting and processing, an in-house quality lab, and careful finishing and inspection before dispatch. The company serves the automotive, electrical, engineering, electronics, and industrial manufacturing sectors.

FAQs

What materials can be slit?
Ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including copper and copper alloys, can be slit, depending on thickness and temper.

What is the difference between slitting and shearing?
Slitting uses rotary knives to cut a continuous coil into strips, while shearing cuts sheets or plates into lengths using a straight blade.

Can I order custom widths in small quantities?
Yes. A service center is well suited to custom widths and smaller lots that would not justify a full master coil.

How is burr controlled during slitting?
By using correct knife clearance, sharp and well-maintained knives, and the right setup for each material and thickness.
